Next steps after a positive or negative test

Updated: 2026-07-08 Β· Not medical advice

Summary

Home test results should guide next steps, not panic or certainty. Repeat testing and clinical follow-up have different roles depending on result and symptoms.

After a positive test

  • Repeat with first-morning urine in 48 hours to confirm line darkening (optional but helpful).
  • Schedule prenatal care or confirm with blood hCG as recommended locally.
  • Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, shoulder pain, heavy bleeding, or fainting (possible ectopic pregnancy warning signs).

After a negative test but period is late

  • Repeat test 3–7 days later; hCG may still be rising.
  • Review medications, recent illness, stress, and contraception changes.
  • Consult a clinician if cycles remain irregular or symptoms persist.
